Over 190 Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) elementary students expanded their creativity and critical thinking during Lynwood Unified’s second annual GATE Field Day on April 10.
GATE Field Day featured a dynamic lineup of hands-on learning activities for third- through sixth-grade students, who engaged in making slime, bouncy balls and creative art projects while learning about the career technical education (CTE) programs available at Firebaugh and Lynwood high schools.
Fifth-grader Yahmir Arellano from Wilson Elementary has a passion for creating games and programming robots – skills he cultivated through the GATE program – but his favorite part of the day was creating a bouncy ball.
“I like that you can control robots and code them to do what you want. You can program and use robots in everyday life,” said Arellano, who plans to continue developing his skills as he pursues a future in computer science or engineering.
The event also welcomed partners such as Mad Science and P.S. Arts alongside student-led CTE activities, including film and video, photography, engineering and biomedical sciences. These collaborations gave GATE students diverse subjects to explore, broadening their understanding of real-world applications.
At Lynwood Unified, GATE students thrive through rigorous academics and enriching afterschool opportunities. The GATE Field Day brought that same spirit of innovation and discovery into the school day, uniting gifted students from across the District. Lynwood Unified is proud to provide equitable, high-quality experiences that nurture the academic and social-emotional growth of every gifted learner.
